Photography as art

What makes photography art?

Digital photography has made the threshold to start photography much smaller. In principle, everyone can now take beautiful photos. Since the advent of smartphones, this has become even easier. The new generations barely use 'old-fashioned' cameras. As a result, photography is often no longer seen as art, because 'everyone can do it'. In this blog we would like to explain to you why photography is indeed still a real art!

The history of photography art

The term photography is derived from Ancient Greek and literally means 'light writing' or 'writing with light'. The first photograph was taken in 1826 by Joseph Nicephore Niépce. The sleep time he then needed to take that picture was 8 hours. He had been experimenting with taking photographs since 1793. In 1850 it became possible to make negatives from photos, so that they could be printed several times. The first color photograph was taken in 1861. At that time, photography was still far from being accessible to consumers. The first analog camera with a roll of film came to the consumer market in 1888. This was Eastman's Kodak Camera. A roll of this camera could take 100 photos and consumers could have those photos printed by a company. Photography became more and more popular and the first digital cameras came on the market in the 1980s, but they were still very expensive and complicated at the time. It wasn't until the 21st century that many photographers switched to digital cameras.

But when is photography art?

Contrary to what many people think, photography has become more and more an art due to the arrival of new techniques and accessibility. Everyone takes photos in their own way and every photo shows a completely different perspective of something. If you let several people take a picture of the same object, no two pictures will ever be the same. Every photographer portrays his or her version of reality by playing with aspects such as perspective and light. Just like with other forms of art, when photography really is art can be debated endlessly. In the end it is personal preference. That is precisely what makes art so beautiful, that everyone can see and feel it in a different way. Photography becomes art when it shows more than just reality. When the photographer uses his own interpretation to give reality a deeper dimension in the photo. The conveyance of emotion is very important here. If a photo evokes strong emotions in you, this photo will feel like art to you.

When do you consider photography art?
